Empowering Farmers through Agriculture: Helpcode Nepal’s Initiatives
Agriculture plays a vital role in the economy of Nepal, employing around 65% of the population and contributing to the country’s GDP. However, the sector is often overlooked and under-resourced, particularly in marginalized communities. Helpcode Nepal recognizes the importance of sustainable agriculture in empowering these communities and has taken various initiatives to support farmers in the region.
Local JTA Support for Fruit Farming
Helpcode Nepal, in coordination with the Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality, agriculture department, and ward no.3, organized a one-day program for local farmers on seasonal fruit farming. Led by the local expert of agriculture from the Rural Municipality, the program focused on providing valuable knowledge and skills to farmers on orange farming. However, the program also highlighted the need for female participation and a longer duration of the program with continuous monitoring to ensure the success of the farmers. Helpcode Nepal also encouraged farmers to unite and form a group to increase their bargaining power and access to resources.
Interaction with Key Farmers for Vegetable Farming
Helpcode Nepal organized an interaction with key farmers, in the presence of the Ward Chairperson and JTA, to discuss off-seasonal vegetable farming, with a focus on cucumber farming. The interaction allowed farmers to share their thoughts and experiences related to vegetable farming, and the team also talked about collecting crops from the farmers’ lands. The interaction provided a platform for the farmers to discuss important issues and find solutions to the challenges they face in their businesses.
Establishment of Vegetable Collection Centre
Helpcode Nepal organized an event in Dadagau, Chitwan, where the main participants were farmers from the ‘Mehenati Krishak Samuha’ (Hardworking Farmers Group). The event aimed to discuss various topics related to vegetable collection, including the opening of a collection centre and the issues faced by farmers. The farmers received support in the form of two tunnels, provided on a need basis. The event provided a platform for farmers to discuss important issues and find solutions to the challenges they face in their businesses.
Support for Seasonal Fruit Farming and Establishment of Orange Zone
Helpcode Nepal, in coordination with the Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality, ward no.3, and the support of the chairperson of Ichchhakamana RM, established two signboards in Sirantol and Dhap in the Majhgaun area, recognizing it as the “Orange Zone.” The program aimed to identify the areas where high-quality oranges were produced, motivate farmers in their work, and facilitate the marketing process. Helpcode Nepal requested the local authority to continue monitoring and supporting the farmers.
In conclusion, Helpcode Nepal’s initiatives in supporting sustainable agriculture have had a significant impact on the marginalized communities in Nepal. By providing technical support, organizing training programs, establishing vegetable collection centres, and promoting the marketing process, Helpcode Nepal has helped empower farmers in the region. The organization’s efforts are a reminder of the importance of supporting sustainable agriculture in promoting economic growth and improving the livelihoods of rural communities.
